Backyard Hens Find a Permanent Home in Monmouth!

Monmouth City Council was in full consensus that the trial chicken law was a great success and have instructed City staff to put a permanent law allowing backyard hens before Council. We did it everyone!  The new law will be adopted before July 31, 2014.

Staff recommended that the city explore options that would  allow a group to keep chickens E.g., Edwards Addition, apartments, duplex. Council heard the request for ducks and instructed staff to look at backyard requirements for ducks  E.g., larger setbacks, large lot.  If either of these possible revisions are dear to your heart, I recommend that you contact the City Manager to explore.

So my friends, it is with a full heart that I thank each of you for your voice and actions in support of backyard hens in Monmouth. I send special thanks to the Monmouth City Council and staff and to those attending the meeting tonight-the group consisted of coop owners, neighbors and friends, along with a representative from Edwards Addition.

As we move forward, I will be here and hope to see you at future chicken events.   A July 2015 MI Coop Tour is in early planning stages – please contact me if you would like your coop to be considered.  There are only seven openings left – so don’t delay.  I would be happy to answer all your questions.

Warmly,
Domenica

2013 Polk County Chicken Education in Review

We can all learn more
Polk County was gifted with unbelievable educational offerings in 2013.  I wanted to take a moment before we enter our busy holiday season to thank everyone who offered or participated in poultry classes and those that participated in our first  MI Chicken Coop Tour.

There is no reason to stop asking questions and learning during our wet winter months. Our library and Old Mill Feed & Garden are well stocked with many books on chickens.  Breed bios, coop building, chicken care and more. Here is a link to some of my favorite titles. If you plan to incorporate hens into your backyard in 2014 - now is the perfect time to prepare. The number one lesson that you can learn in winter is where to put your coop and run to keep it high and dry and hassle free during our long winters.

Old Mill Feed & Garden 2014 Chick Day will be here before you know it.
Will you be ready?
Isn't it great to be curious and meet people who what to share?

The Community Joins Together to Support Backyard Hen Education

M-I Coop Tour Lawn Sign Project

Hand Crafted by our Community
M-I Coop Tour lawn signs. Be sure
to enter the drawing
and one could
be yours!
It started with an idea: Big beautiful wooden chicken lawn signs that could mark each coop on the Sunday July 14, 2013 M-I Coop Tour and serve as a thank you gift to coop hosts. Coop hosts agreed that they would be a fun and festive accent for our tour - and the project was off and running.

Bringing any idea to life takes a number of steps, and in this case, each step was made possible with  donations from community members.

The first giant step was taken by Dave & Vici Upton, owners of Independence Town & Country Hardware.  Vici read the M-I Coop Tour sponsor invitation and offered to donate the plywood needed to make the signs.

Town & County Hardware has become a true friend to Polk County backyard hen enthusiasts.  They've added a new section to their store for chicken products and carry supplies needed for coop/run builders.

Next, Contractor, Brian Maroney volunteered to cut out the chickens. This work required skill and proper equipment-and Brian had both.

Brian and Shannon Maroney will serve as Coop Hosts on the M-I Coop Tour - wait until you see the panel chicken run that Brian built.

Domenica Protheroe, Tour Organizer, got busy to look for the patten.  She could visualize an image of a simple chickens and after dozen of google searches finally found it.

The pattern was printed and within two days Brian Maroney cut out 16 beautiful chickens.

Meanwhile, coop hosts were putting their heads together to find a location to paint 16 chickens. This is were coop host Marge Jacobs raised her hand and offered her Art Barn for the project.

Meet all on the M-I Coop Tour!
Coop Host Teresa Hazen, daughter Becca, and Domenica met at the Art Barn and found that Marge Jacobs had organized and donated everything needed to get the job done.  We had three work areas, paint, brushes and paint thinner waiting. The setting was inspiring, as is Marge's artful coop and property.

Teresa, Becca, Domenica, and at times Marge, spent four nights painting the Chickens.  It was great experience and new friendships were formed.

So you can see it was the perfect match of generous and talented individuals that gave this project life.

We hope our Coop Tour lawn signs help you find each coop on the tour and bring you a smile.

Be sure to enter the free drawing at the Home Coop. One lucky winner will receive their own painted chicken! The second prize is a year subscription to a Poultry Magazines.

A Coop Tour takes many hands - we are grateful for all of our sponsors, ticket agents, each coop host and our volunteers!
